Position Summary

The Dean of Students provides progressive visionary leadership for the student services program including: admissions, records, student financial aid, recruiting, public information, athletics, career advising, strategic enrollment management and retention management, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and student clubs and organizations. The Dean of Students leads the development of student services policies and develops and administers student services budget. The Dean of Students assumes administrative responsibility for all programs and coordinates with campus and site coordinators who provide daily operational administrative oversight. The Dean of Students works collaboratively with the executive team to deliver high quality programs and services that promote student success. The Dean of Students is proficient in multi-tasking and project management. The Dean of Students serves as a member of the President’s cabinet and reports directly to the President.
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience according to ACCS Board of Trustees Salary Schedule B.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and overall supervision of all student services units consistent with the vision statement, the statement of purpose, and the institutional goals and objectives of the College and the Alabama Community College System.
  • Coordinates the delivery of enrollment and retention initiatives for the College.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to personnel in the Division of Student Services including but not limited to Financial Aid, Office of Registrar, Admissions and Enrollment Management, Dual Enrollment, and Testing.
  • Plan and ensure annual evaluations of the student services units of the college.
  • Administer permanent academic records including ensuring the integrity of the implementation of academic policies used to create and maintain academic records in compliance with professional standards and federal and state regulations.
  • Monitors student records and evaluation of transcripts for transfer of credit.
  • Maintain a record of compliance with state and federal education mandates and guidelines related to financial aid and student privacy.
  • Develop a plan for budgeting, purchasing and distributing supplies, equipment and technology needs for all students services functions.
  • Review, revise and publish all student services publications and materials, such as the Student Handbook printed and electronics.
  • Develop key collaborative relationships with campus administrative areas, faculty, and campus and community leaders to enhance planning implementing strategic initiatives, resolving issues, and responding to crisis incidents.
  • Coordinate Student Affairs response to major crisis and other unusual events impacting students within the college community.
  • Advises the President in developing and interpreting data relating to student services to ensure programs correlate with the community needs.
  • Plans and coordinates the College’s annual commencement ceremony, college visits, and student orientation (ROAR).
  • Serve as chair of the Student Judiciary Committee.
  • Manage the student services budget and approve all expenditures.
  • Prepare student services related reports as required for the college to the Alabama Community College System and other agencies.
  • Manage the development of an Enrollment Management Plan for the college.
  • Assist in strategic planning for the college.
  • Supervise the development, revision, and implementation of college policies and procedures.
  • Assesses and evaluates the utilization and effectiveness of student services personnel.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assist the instructional division with the Academic Counseling/Advising.
  • Assist with the distribution of reports identifying concerns over student behavior utilizing a Student Behavioral Resource Team and Threat Assessment.
  • Advise the President in developing and interpreting data relating to student services to ensure programs correlate with the community needs.
  • Prepare and present enrollment updates and reports.
  • Serve as the College American with Disabilities (ADA) Coordinator.
  • Serve as the coordinator of Title V, VI, IX, and Section 504 of Title V, and Title VI for the College.
  • Represent the College within the Reid State service area, state, and local professional groups and/or organizations, professional accrediting organizations and the community at large.
  • Participate and provide collaborative leadership in professional development activities.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior, loyalty, honesty, and integrity, both on and off the campus.
  • Actively participate in division/college committees and campus activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience with documented progression in degree of complexity and responsibility for administrative task and leadership in student services or closely related services is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in Postsecondary Education is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Understanding of the College mission and vision is required.
  • Ability to interpret and apply statistical data to inform daily decision making is required.
  • Working knowledge of Americans with Disabilities (ADA) is required.
  • Proven Project Management Experience abilities managing multiple departments, people, projects is required.
  • Strong working knowledge and participation within required SACSCOC requirements is required.
  • Demonstrated multi-tasking on critical projects and proven prioritization with sense of urgency is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree or professional degree in education is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of leadership of a Student Services Division is preferred.
  • Demonstrated project management proficiencies is preferred.
  • Experience working with Athletics is preferred.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Federal TRIO Programs is preferred.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.
Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:
  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
